Billed as the highest residence in the Midwest, this duplex penthouse in downtown Chicago stands atop the Residences at the St. Regis Chicago condo tower.

“It’s the tallest residence in Chicago as well as the entire country outside of New York City,” said Rob Pontarelli, senior vice president of marketing at Magellan Development Group, the developer of the 101-story building, the third-tallest in Chicago and the tallest anywhere designed by a woman, architect Jeanne Gang.

The building, which was completed in 2020, offers 393 residences and 192 hotel rooms or suites, with the hotel component on floors one through 12, and the condos starting on the 13th floor, he said.

Residence 9201 takes up all of the 92nd floor and a portion of floor 93, Pontarelli said. It is one of 20 Sky Penthouses, five of which are on the market. “We’re at 80% sold or occupied.”

In 2022, another duplex penthouse at the St. Regis, a five-bedroom unit, sold for $20.56 million, The Wall Street Journal reported.

“You have spectacular views, unobstructed 360 degrees in every direction”—of the city, Lake Michigan and the “Michigan and Indiana shorelines on a clear day,” Pontarelli said.

Architectural and design details include two balconies, direct elevator access, east and west entrances, floor-to-ceiling windows and 13-foot ceilings on the lower floor, he said. “The home has two butler’s pantries—one for drinks and the other for meal prep.”

From the front door, you step into a foyer that opens to a balcony facing Lake Michigan, Pontarelli said. This main level also has a living room area, a formal dining room and an open-concept family room and eat-in kitchen, which has Gaggenau appliances, a walk-in pantry, contemporary Snaidero cabinetry, and quartz and stone countertops.

One of the three secondary bedrooms is now set up as a den, he said. All are en-suite, and two of them have access to a balcony.

“The primary bedroom is larger than many New York apartments,” he said. It offers a walk-through closet with custom cabinetry and an en-suite with two sinks, heated floors, a whirlpool tub and a walk-in shower.

Stairs lead up to the 93rd floor, which has 11-foot ceilings and a powder room, Pontarelli said. “It’s finished as an open area, and it could be a game room or another bedroom if that is needed.”

Neighborhood Notes

The St. Regis is in the 28-acre Lakeshore East community, where the Chicago River meets Lake Michigan, Pontarelli said. It includes a 6-acre park, “which is virtually outside the door of the St. Regis. It’s great for walking your dog and picnics.”
